Gastro-Physics And Dietary Anti-Matter

By Will Clower, Ph.D. Do a little people-watching, next time youre in the grocery line. Theres always someone with a cart, bulging with every conceivable kind of diet food. Flats of turkey bacon prop listlessly against the fat free half & half and Olestra cookies. At first glance, this is clearly someone who is completely health conscious, diet minded, and watching what they eat. But peek beneath the basket to the lower rack where you normally find dog food, kitty litter, and toxic chemicals and you will see the full case of Mountain Dew. Diet foods and junk foods, rubbing wrappers in the very same cart might suggest mental illness, delusional optimism, or some other form of brain strain. However, unbeknownst to the rest of us, these folks are actually brilliant physicists, cleverly disguised as profoundly confused shoppers, so as not to attract any attention. They throw you off their trail with very characteristic behaviors, like chasing a candy bar with a Diet Coke. Yes, we can now release the fact that these scientists are members of the little know branch of their field known as gastro-physics, and they are actually testing a high-level theory regarding matter and anti-matter. Just as matter can be annihilated by anti-matter, they show how calories can be eliminated, obliterated, and just forgotten about altogether if you just consume them with their Universal opposite. Oreos and skim milk cancel perfectly. M&Ms are vaporized into the next astral plane when thrown into a trail mix bag with a few Spanish peanuts. And then theres diet drinks the perfect dietary anti-matter for any form of plasticized fruit rollup, gummy worms, or even weight loss candy bars. Sorry for the dive into the messy scientific details, but theres just a bit more you should know about this physics phenomenon. The calorie cancellation must happen within a certain time frame, if you are serious about blipping away that ingot of taffy you just ate. Its like your mother explained, logically, that swimming after quick a baloney and cheese sandwich at the beach will make you drop like a rock to the bottom of the ocean, unless you wait the required 30 minutes or so. In just the same way, modern gastro-physicists indicate that full cancellation can only take effect if the diet product smashes into the junk food within 7.45 minutes. These guys are brilliant. So the next time you see cleverly disguised gastro-physicists chasing their Snickers with a Diet Coke, dont harrumph. Theyre not as daft as they seem. Although these may well smell delicious they are not benefecial for aromatherapy. An essential oil is: Thin and watery rather than oily. Swift to evaporate and it wont leave a greasemark on paper. Overpoweringly scented when neat, which can be quite unpleasant. Perfumed oils will always smell pleasant whereas essential oils often have more of the effect of smelling salts. All essential oils fall into three basic categories: TOP NOTES : These oils evaporate very quickly. They are generally uplifting and stimulating, with a greenish, fresh aroma. MIDDLE NOTES : These are used to help with most bodily functions and the body;s metabolism. BASE NOTES : These are extremely relaxing, sometimes sedative and generally have a lovely, warm aroma. Herbal Headache Remedies: Inexpensive - Few Side Effects - Worth Trying

By Lisa J. Lehr Headaches are a common problem. About 12% of the population suffers from migraines; counting sinus, tension, and cluster headaches, that number probably approaches 100%. While over-the-counter and prescription headache remedies often are appropriate, the expense and side effects can be problematic for some people. These problems may be avoided with any of a wide selection of herbal and mineral supplements. Here are some you can try; they’re listed in alphabetical order, and, as always, you should check with your health care provider if you have any questions. General precautions: — Some are not recommended for pregnant or nursing women or children under age two. — Don’t take any of these with Coumadin or other blood thinners without consulting a doctor or pharmacist. — Don’t take them if you have kidney problems without consulting a doctor or pharmacist. Butterbur. Sold under the brand name Petadolex, it should be taken regularly, as a preventative; you may not be able to find it at the health foods store (if not, do an Internet search), and it’s not inexpensive. Cayenne. Cayenne dilates your blood vessels, improving circulation; it is also a natural analgesic. You can buy cayenne capsules and take them regularly as a preventative; or you can take cayenne on an as-needed basis, and if you have cayenne (red pepper) in your spice cupboard, it’ll do. Put some in a glass of water, or a cup of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. How much is effective without being overpowering is something you’ll have to experiment to discover; start with 1/8 teaspoon and work your way up. You may be able to tolerate a whole teaspoon–but you may find relief from a lot less. Celery seeds. You can find these at the grocery store. Soak the seeds in hot water, strain, and sip like tea. Chamomile. Chamomile tea is calming and soothing, and readily available at the grocery store. Cinnamon reduces stress, loosens tight muscles, and lowers blood pressure–all of which ease a headache. Co-Enzyme Q10 acts on energy production within the mitochondria in the cells. Eucalyptus oil. This is an essential oil; put a few drops of this in a carrier oil (vegetable, olive, etc.) and massage into your forehead to help with tension headaches. Also, try putting a few drops on a handkerchief and sniffing it. Feverfew and ginkgo reduce migraines and vascular headaches by reducing blood vessel dilation and spasms. They also have anti-inflammatory properties; ginkgo, in addition, relieves dizziness often associated with headaches. You can try chewing feverfew leaves, although they are very bitter; or get a tincture or capsules. This is a good remedy for migraine or cluster headaches. Feverfew appears to be better at prevention than treatment of migraines, so you may want to take it on a regular basis. Both are available at health foods stores. Ginger relaxes blood vessels in the head and reduces swelling in the brain, and activates natural opiates in the brain that relieve pain. It can be taken in the form of tea or in tablets available at health foods stores; use fresh or powdered ginger when you cook, eat crystallized ginger, or put fresh-grated ginger in a drink. Ginger is useful for migraines as well as other headaches, and also eases nausea. Honey is a natural sugar, pre-digested by bees, that has been used since Bible times. It contains potassium and magnesium, which will help relax the arteries and allow more blood to flow to the brain. Try taking a couple of teaspoons if you feel a migraine coming on; it also might help with a hangover. Try boiling equal parts of honey and apple cider vinegar and inhaling the steam. Lavender reduces pain and relaxes. Massage or sniff as with eucalyptus oil. Lithium, a salt that is used to treat bipolar disorder, can help those suffering from cluster headaches. It is available at the health foods store. Marjoram eases muscle tension. Menthol preparations can be helpful in relieving tension headaches. Massage the oil into your temples. Magnesium. Headache sufferers sometimes have underlying magnesium deficiency. Following the recommended dosage on the label, take with meals, but not with dairy products–magnesium interferes with calcium absorption. Milk thistle, like feverfew, has been subject to many clinical trials that clearly demonstrate its effectiveness. It is frequently recommended to counteract the harmful effects of alcohol and other drugs on the liver. Silymarin, a powerful anti-oxidant, is largely responsible for the medical benefits of this herb. Mustard. Soak your feet for 10-20 minutes in a hot foot bath to which you have added 2 teaspoons of powdered mustard. The heat and mustard will work together to ease your headache, and mustard powder is available at the grocery store. Passiflora incarnata, a tropical herb, has been used since the 19th century for nervous conditions. Clinical trials have demonstrated the relaxing and calming effects of Passiflora; it is often recommended to treat anxiety and reduce tension. Peppermint reduces pain and tension. Massage or sniff as with the other oils. (Warning: keep the peppermint oil away from your eyes!) This may be beneficial for tension headaches. Drink peppermint tea, available at the grocery store. Riboflavin (vitamin B-2), like CoQ10, acts on energy production within the mitochondria; see package for the recommended dosage. Rosemary. Rosemary oil helps keep blood vessels dilated; rub a few drops of it into your temples. Or make a rosemary tea using one teaspoon of rosemary in a cup of hot water; cover and steep for 10 minutes; strain and drink. Valerian reduces tension and pain. It’s available in capsule form at the health foods store. White willow bark will give you results similar to aspirin, but is much gentler on the stomach. This is the natural ingredient from which aspirin is made. Capsules or tincture can be found in health foods stores. So, if you, like many people today, hesitate to spend the money–and take the risk–sometimes associated with traditional medications, try these first. For most headache sufferers, it can’t hurt. Yoga, TM, Reiki - all attained world-wide popularity. Three Modern Movements As a byproduct three modern movements came into being. They are Neo-humanisn, interreligious dialogue and Holistic Health. The term ‘Neo-humanism’ refers to a basic change in modern man’s attitude towards himself and his fellowmen which is characterised by the recognition of the essential goodness of man focus on existential problems striving for higher transcendental experience. The contribution of Ramakrishna Movement to inter-faith dialogue was immense. Other movements like Maharshi International University & Self Realisation Fellowship contributed to this change in the human mindset. Holistic Health Holistic Health refers to a modern movement which regards health as a dynamic state of the total human being. Although the symptoms of a disease may be found in certain tissues or organs, health is not a mere removal of such symptoms by the treatment of the affected tissues or organs, but a state of multidimensional experience, according to this perspective. The mind, body & environment are in a state of dynamic interaction & the maintenance of this interaction in an optimum state of efficiency is what health means. In other words ” To be healthy is to have the ability to live with full use of our faculties and be vigorous, alert & happy to be alive, even in old age, despite an occasional bout of illness.” This ” operational health” has been defined as wellness. It is a sense of all-round well-being as contrasted with illness. . The greatest aspect of holistic health is its recognition of the role played by mind in health. ” Mind is omnipotent ” said Freud & he had shown that the Unconscious played a key role in causing certain diseases which came to be described as psychosomatic diseases. He looked upon the Unconscious chiefly as the repository of negative emotions. His early disciple Carl Jung expanded the concept of the Unconscious to make it include good emotions and even spiritual urges. Adler, another disciple of Freud showed that the ego could alter unconscious behaviour. The connecting link between the body and mind was not clear. The work of the Canadian endocrinologist Hans Selye brought the much needed connecting link. In his classic work ” The Stress of Life ” Selye showed that mental stress was the root cause of several types of common illness such as hypertension, hyperacidity etc. The ’stressor’ (the original source of stress ) excites the hypothalamus in the brain. This vital organ which controls the autonomic nervous system activates the pituitary to secrete the stress hormone ( known as ACTH ) which stimulates the secretion of several hormones and steroids (including the well known, adrenaline or epinephrine). More sugar is released into the blood & BP is increased as a result of these changes. According to Selye, stress is unavoidable in life. ( The emotional centre in the brain, when upset, stimulates the oxintic cells to secrete more hydrochloric acid in the stomach which leads to hyperacidity.) When it goes beyond a certain tolerance level ( which varies from person to person ) the system breaks down resulting in illness. To the scientific picture of body-mind interrelationship given above, certain new concepts were added. One was the idea that if negative emotions could cause illness, positive emotions can cause “wellness”. The attention of medical experts & the imagination of the public was captured by this innovative idea when Normal Cousins, editor of Saturday Review, published a convincing account of his recovery from a debilitating & incurable disease of the connective tissue. The patient’s understanding of the disease & his active participation in the recovery process was highlighted by his case. The most difficult and controversial aspect of holistic health is another idea that by creating proper awareness within himself man could exercise a certain degree of voluntary control over the healing processes taking place in his body. After the aftermath of Pavlov’s demonstration of conditioned reflexes, another Russian scientist K M Bykov and his colleagues showed in 1924 that several involuntary processes such as regulation of body heat, heart rhythm, production of urine, BP etc which were mediated by the autonomic nervous system could be brought under voluntary control. The above finding was corroborated later during experiments conducted on animals under ‘operant’ (voluntary)conditioning. Hundreds of people found that they could bring under control their heart rhythm, brain waves etc with the help of the biofeedback technique. Indian Yogis in the West also demonstrated that they could alter metabolic rate, heartbeat, body temperature etc simply by their will power, without the use of any biofeedback instruments. It was claimed that even diseases such as cancer could be cured or held in check be creating strong faith & the right type of consciousness.Despite the exaggeration and the propaganda which accompanied these claims, the basic idea that man can consciously regulate involuntary and unseen physiolo- gical processes came to be accepted as a fact by the medical community. Various meditation techniques like Transcendental Meditation, Zen, Yoga were becoming popular in the West in those days. Apart from the spiritual benefits, (In Transcendental Meditation, the existence of a fourth major state of Consciousness called Transcendental Consciousness was proved by Dr Keith Wallace in his Phd Thesis ) practical Yoga teachers showed that Meditation also produced other beneficial effects such as reduction of tension, lowering of BP, relaxation of muscles, increase of concentration & work efficiency & even increase of immunological resistance to diseases. As a result, some form of Meditation has become an essential part of most holistic health programmes.( Dr Harold Bloomfied says that TM can be used as an adjunct to psychiatric practice.) The success of Acupuncture, herbology etc which came to be recognised as ‘ Alternative Medicine ” , lent much support to the holistic health position. Two great discoveries strengthened this position. One was the discovery of ‘biological clocks’ in nature and the existence of biorhythms in the human body. The other discovery was that the brain produced certain neuro- modulators called endorphins which have the property of reducing pain. 5 Simple Techniques To Help You Catch More Fish

By Trevor Kugler p>In my estimation, many anglers overlook some very simple things that effect their fish catching ability. Like many things in life, it’s often the most obvious things that get overlooked, and in most cases these obvious things have a very big impact on our lives, and for the purposes of this article, our fishing. These 5 techniques are going to be focused on the river or stream angler who spends much oh their time wading in the water, trying to catch fish. So if you’re a Largemouth Bass angler who fishes from a $20,000 bass boat, these tips probably won’t mean much to you. In any case, here are the tips and you can do with them what you will: 1) Size Matters - The size of your line matters. In river and stream situations fish are usually much more wary than in a muddy lake with a lot of boat traffic. In most cases the water is very clear as well. This means that the fish are much more likely to see your line. I personally use four pound test, which is all but invisible to the fish. I’ve had the direct experience of using six pound test and getting no bites. Then switching to four pound test and catching fish one after another. 2) Your Clothes Matter - The color of your clothing matters. You wan t to avoid wearing loud colors that will make it easier for the fish to see you. Remember, if the fish can see you, they normally won’t bite (especially in clear water mountain rivers). Wear darker more drab colors if at all possible. 3) Avoid Loud Noises - I know, as anglers we are all aware of the “be quiet” rule while fishing, but it’s even more pronounced on river and stream situations. Especially on rivers and streams that don’t receive much fishing pressure. The biggest thing to avoid as far as noise goes on rivers and streams are rocks banging together underwater. Remember this while wading from here to there. 4) Present Bait Naturally - You want to present your bait as naturally as possible. You want your bait to look like it would without hooks in it. The best way I know to accomplish this is by using gang hooks. The bottom line is for your bait to look as natural as possible. 5) Clean Your Hands - Fish have a very sensitive sense of smell and can smell your scent on your bait. This is a big reason people use “attractors” on their baits. I don’t think these things attract fish as much as they cover the scent of humans! Using a hand sanitizer is a good idea or just grabbing a handful of grass and rubbing it in your hands has always worked well for me. Start employing any or all of these five techniques and you will start catching more fish; it’s as simple as that. Catching fish doesn’t have to be difficult, especially if we’re reminded of the basics from time to time. Choosing a Restaurant

By Vernon Stent Eating out is great. To leave the cooking and the dishes to someone else - if only for one night - and just sit back and relax is surely the ultimate indulgence. Most of us who eat out have our favourite haunts where we feel comfortable, the food is good, the service is good and the place is clean. To me, this is heaven, knowing in advance that I and my friends will enjoy the experience and will not wake up the next morning with tummy ache or sickness. Occasionally, of course, we need to try something new. Perhaps our favourite restaurant has changed ownership and has lost some of its appeal, or perhaps it’s time for a change for change’s sake. And, of course, if I am on vacation in a far away land, I may have no choice in the matter. Trying a new restaurant can be great fun - but can also be a bit of a challenge. We all know what attributes to look for, as I said above, I want to feel comfortable in a good atmosphere, enjoy good food, good service and, surely most importantly, be sure the place is hygenic. And this last point surely be the first point to look out for. When my wife and I are checking out a new restaurant the first thing she will do is visit the ladies room. A great deal of information about the cleanliness of the establishment can be gathered just from visiting this place. This is probably the hardest area to keep clean and is open to public inspection (or open to 50% of the public, depending on which sex you are). If the toilets are filthy, are the kitchens and store rooms also in a similar state? While my wife is busy with her surveillance, I will go on a hunt for fly killers.
